Brumby set to rock the Web

The oldest chair company in Georgia is rocking forward.

ROCKING ALONG: Owner Otis Brumby (left) and daughter Spain are turning to the Internet.
The 123-year-old Brumby Chair Company of Marietta is getting a Web site so surfers can learn about its history, production, and furniture. The site (www.brumbyrocker.com) is being designed by Barnes Consulting Inc. of Marietta and will be up and running by the end of March.

"More and more people are doing business on the computer. Going online is a good way to market ourselves," said Spain Brumby Gregory, the showroom manager of the Marietta store and the great-granddaughter of the company's founder.

Although at one time the family owned company made 150 different pieces of furniture, it now makes and sells 400 handcrafted rockers a year. The Jumbo rocker, which takes about a week to make and costs about $720, is the company's signature piece.

Brumby Chair had more than $300,000 in sales in 1997, and half its sales were outside of Georgia. In fact, since 1992, the company has shipped rockers to 46 states, including Alaska.

"My grandfather and uncle, Tom Brumby, Jr., put out a catalog for over 50 years," said Otis Brumby, owner of the company as well as of the Marietta Daily Journal and Neighbor Newspapers "Getting a Web site would be very consistent with their philosophy and management style."
